Pride in Small Places: Celebrating Visibility and Community in Allegan, Michigan
The Sassy OliveAt The Sassy Olive, Pride Month is more than just a celebration—it’s a reflection of our commitment to inclusivity, visibility, and community support.
In 2020, our founder, Landria Johnson, became the first business owner in Downtown Allegan to proudly fly a Pride flag during the month of June . This simple act was a statement of solidarity and love, signaling to the LGBTQ+ community that they are seen, valued, and supported in our town.
That same spirit of inclusivity led to the organization of Allegan’s first-ever Pride festival, “Allegan Out Loud,” in 2022. Co-organized by Landria and community members, the event aimed to create a supportive, inclusive environment in an area where such celebrations were not always common .
As we celebrate Pride Month this year, we continue to honor that legacy by supporting organizations that uplift LGBTQ+ youth. A portion of proceeds from our Pride Collection will be donated to The Trevor Project, a nonprofit dedicated to providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ+ young people.
We invite you to join us in celebrating love, diversity, and community. Whether you’re a longtime ally or new to the conversation, there’s a place for you here.
